First investitures at the 1st!

March 31, 2007

It was a great sight to see nine Cubs making their promises to become Cub Scouts and invested by CSL Graham Phillips. Just four weeks ago the 1st Sittingbourne (SA) reopened and now it has nine brand new Cubs who have all made their promises and looked very smart in their uniforms.

Cub Investiture March 2007

The Cubs were supported by their parents who took part in relay games and enjoyed tea and discussions with the GSL about how Scouting can be supported.

Present for the occasion were Assistant County Commissioner for Cubs Bunty Ridgeway, District Cub Scout Leader Angela McSweeny Captain Robert Jepson representing Kent County, Sittingbourne and Milton District and the Salvation Army. Each presenting the Cubs with the appropriate badge for their uniform.

Captain Jepson later presented the Easter Story to the Cubs, asking each Cub to draw on a paper plate what they knew about Easter and reminded them that Easter is not just about chocolate but has Jesus at the centre.

Promises were also made in the Scout section and four Scouts were invested by GSL
Gary Chadwick. Mike Harding from the Kent County Scout support team was present. The Scouts also did individual presentations on their hobbies and were each awarded their hobbies badge.

Scout and Guide Leaders training Sunbury 2007

Leaders joined together for useful ideas on recruiting and retaining adults, valuing diversity, addressing special needs and a host of other ideas to enhance the weekly Scout and Guide programmes at the various Salvation Army centre’s represented.

The leaders enjoyed times of fellowship, worship, reflection, education and fun. Special thanks must go to Melissa Green, the Adult Training Manager for the Scout Association and Leaders from Girl Guiding UK who presented the Guide focussed sessions. Notes from the Scout focussed sessions can be found on the 4th Medway (SA) Web site and our own programme ideas page. Photos taken by leaders from Medway can be found in our photo gallery

Mothers Day Church Parade

March 20, 2007

The Group held its first ever Church parade this weekend on Mothers day.

Going to the Army

It was great to see nearly all the new members of the Scout Group join with 9th Sittingbourne (SA) Guide Group and the regular congregation at The Sittingbourne Salvation Army Church to celebrate Mothers day. The Scout Group does not yet have it’s own flags, but were kindly allowed to Parade the Union Flag by the Guide Group.

Members of both the Guide and Scout Groups took part in the service reading prayers, taking the offering, helping the Captain and paying tribute to their Mum’s.

It was fantastic to see a full hall with lots of Mums and Dads of the young people joining for the service led by Captain Robert Jepson. The young people presented potted primrose plants to their Mum’s and all ladies present in the meeting. They then joined the other Young People in the Junior Church.

Lift Off! Inauguration & First night of new Group a resounding success

March 8, 2007

The 1st Sittingbourne (SA) Scout Group is finally open again. According to the Gilwell archives the Group has been closed for over forty years!

The nine new Cubs and six new Scouts met together at their respective meeting times for the first time and had an exciting evening of games, learning how a Cub Pack and a Scout Troup functions, getting to know each other their new leaders and getting their first glimpse at what lay ahead for them in their Scouting Adventure.

The Cubs and Scouts joined together as Captain Robert Jepson (Sittingbourne Salvation Army) supported by Jill Moore the YPSM (Sunday School Leader) inaugurated the Scout Group and welcomed it into the church family at Sittingbourne and Salvation Army Scouting. He recounted the story of the Good Samaritan and challenged the young people and the leaders to “Be Prepared to do good”.

The Group was presented with its new certificate of registration by District Commissioner Tracey Swift who also invested Gary Chadwick, Graham Phillips and Kyle Mortimer as the Groups new leaders presenting each of them with their leader warrants.

It was a fantastic start to the new Group everyone left exited and looking forward to more of the same next week. Follow this link to check out the pictures photo gallery  or click on any of the Photo’s!
